What does '8SAFE' mean?

The 8SAFE label means that a recipe or product is made without gluten and the top eight food allergens: milk, wheat, soy, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish & shellfish. Which makes them safe to eat for those of us with multiple food sensitivities.

What foods will be tested in the 8SAFE Program?

The foods you'll be challenging during the 8SAFE Program are wheat, milk (dairy), soy, egg, peanut, tree nut, fish, shellfish & gluten. You will remove these foods completely from your current diet for 8 weeks, except during the testing phase when we will systematically reintroduce these foods, one at a time, and record any adverse reactions. But no worries — I'll give you more details in the program and coach you through it all!

What foods can I eat?

You'll have lots of options to choose from, I promise. The program includes all fruits & vegetables, some grains, legumes, chicken, pork, beef, and so much more. As long as it doesn't include gluten or the top eight allergens it's safe to eat!

Isn't it too restrictive?

Depends on how you look at it. Some will focus on what they can't have — they'll feel trapped and restricted from a seeming lack of options (based on their usual diet). Others will enjoy the freedom that a restricted diet can bring — rather than the daily drone of what's for dinner (with limitless options available), the short list to pull from can be liberating. It can also be a great catalyst for getting creative. But keep in mind that either mind set is a choice — it's entirely up to you which camp you'd like to belong to.

It also helps to keep in mind that the program is temporary and you're doing it willingly. You're choosing to make your health a priority by embarking on an eight week experiment  — one that could very well save you from years of chronic symptoms. Personally, I'd rather restrict my diet for a few weeks than let chronic symptoms restrict my life for years.

Will I be hungry?

There are no portion sizes or calorie restrictions in the 8SAFE Program, so you can eat as much or as little as you'd like. If you find that you're hungrier than usual while on the program, you'll want to check to make sure that you're eating enough calories, increase your amount of protein, or add healthy snacks into your daily routine. Also, our bodies also like to eat on a schedule — if you stick to eating your main meals and snacks at about the same time each day, you'll feel yourself getting hungry consistently at those times. it's also common for us humans to mistake feeling thirsty as feeling hungry, so be sure that you're drinking plenty of water.

Will I lose weight?

The 8SAFE Program is not a weight loss program. That said, lots of people will experience weight loss as a happy side effect (often due to eliminating a trigger food). But at the same time, someone who has been struggling to gain weight may gain a few pounds after eliminating a food that they're sensitive to and their body is better able to absorb nutrients.

Should I consult with my doctor before doing the program?

Yes. This program is for individuals who have sought out medical care and consulted with their physician regarding their symptoms to rule out underlying disease or illness. If your examinations and testing come back negative, then you may want to discuss the possibility of food sensitivities and if an elimination diet could benefit you. Also, concerning gluten sensitivities — you'll want to be tested for Celiac (if that is a concern) prior to eliminating gluten from your diet. Celiac testing while eating a gluten free diet will cause inaccurate results.

Is the program good for children?

The 8SAFE Program is for adults 18 or older. That said, I've had parents who've gone through the program and have reporting being very successful at identifying food sensitivities in their children as a result.
